The new Jane Eyre trailer is here!!!

The new Jane Eyre trailer has arrived!   I remember reading Charlotte Bronte's novel in high school.  After spending a week complaining about how boring it was (sorry, Mom) I was considering spark noting the rest.  For those of you who have never read it, Jane Eyre is long.  About 3/5 into the book I was hooked and then finished it.  I can't wait to go home for Thanksgiving and get my Jane Eyre book.  I'm going to spend my Thanksgiving break with Mr. Rochester. Anyway, check out the trailer.  The film opens March 11,2011:

Book Blogger Hop!

Book Blogger Hop
Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Crazy-for-books.  I love these book blog hops.  Over the past week I have found some great blogs and have learned so much about blogging.
Question of the week:  If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?
Depends on the series.  If the series is like the Sookie Stackhouse books where Charlaine Harris did a quick recap of what happened in previous books (only the info needed to understand the story) then no.  I actually didn’t even read the first book in that series.  I had seen the first season of True Blood and wanted to know what happened next so I skipped the first and started with the second book.  To this day I have read the whole series (amazing!) and still have yet to read the first book.
If, however, the series was meant to be read in order, and each book follows the previous without a recap, then yes, I would start with the first title.

Book Review: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Title: Darkfever
Author: Karen Marie Moning
Series: Fever (#1)
ISBN: 0385339151
Publisher:  Delacorte Press
Genre: Dark Fantasy/Mystery
Pages:  H- 304

Synopsis: (Goodreads.com)  MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman.

Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

What I thinkMackayla Lane goes to Ireland to find her sister’s murderer.  She ends up living in a bookstore with Jericho Barrons, helping him find a powerful book.  To make matters worse, she confronted by a “death-by-sex” Fae, Vlane, who adds humiliation to her emotional ride abroad.
I loved this book.  It had everything: action, mystery, paranormal, and even a little bit of romance...a little bit....more like a hint of a possible romance.  There were moments that had me laughing out loud.  The contrast between Mac and Barrons made their relationship much more interesting to read.  The bickering that went on between the two of them was hilarious.  I just wish that the hint of romance would have turned into something more.  Hopefully in the following books, their relationship will grow.
The action was thrilling and suspenseful.  I read the book in one day-I couldn’t stop reading. I absolutely LOVED it.  5/5

FOOD: Banana Spiced Oatmeal

I have a crazy obsession with oatmeal.  It’s the perfect food.  It's healthy. It's delicious.  It's filling.  AND there are so many different ways to cook it that it never gets old!  This recipe started off slightly different...I came across it on Kath Eats Real Food and modified it a bit.
Here’s what you need:
½ c. of quick oats (Quaker)
½ c. of milk
½ c. of water
1 banana
cinnamon
¼ tsp vanilla
2 tsp of brown sugar and some more for sprinkling
nutmeg

How to make:
1-add the oats, milk, water, and banana (sliced) into a saucepan and put on medium heat.
2-once it starts boiling stir it and let it sit for 30 sec. then stir it again...repeat until it has a creamy texture and isn’t runny (watery)...at this point I usually use the spatula to mash up the banana slices a bit but that is optional
3- once it is at the desired texture turn off the stove.
4-sprinkle cinnamon (I usually put a lot-enough to cover the top but its up to you and how much you like) and nutmeg (as much as you like) on top; add the sugar and vanilla;  stir/mix everything together
5-put it in a bowl and sprinkle the some cinnamon and sugar on top
6-enjoy some holiday tasting oatmeal
(You can modify the recipe all you want)

Book Review: Dark Prince by Christine Feehan

Title:  Dark Prince
Author:  Christine Feehan
ISBN:  0843955287
Publisher:  Leisure Books
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Pages: P-314

Synopsis (from Goodreads.com)
Prince of the Night
He came to her in the night, a predator strength and power chiseled his features. The seduction was deep and elemental; he affected her soul. His need. His darkness. His terrible haunting lonliness. Her senses aroused, she craved the dangerous force of his body. Burned for him. And he had only touched her with his mind.

Lady of the Light
She came to him at dawn, his bleakest hour. As the beast raged inside him, threatening to consume him, he vented his centuries-old despair in an anguished cry that filled the waning night. And she answered, a ray of light, piercing his darkness. A beautiful angel. Her compassion, courage, and innocence awakened in him an exquisite longing and tenderness. He knew he must possess her, for only she could tame his savage side and lift the dark shadow from his soul. Apart they were desolate, bereft. Intertwined physically and spiritually, they could heal one another and experience an eternity of nights filled with love

What I Think:  Christine Feehan’si Dark Prince is a refreshing take on vampires (Carpathians).  In the novel, Mikhail, prince of the Carpathians, finds his lifemate (soulmate), Raven Whitney.  Raven is the only person who can keep him from death.
Before I go into what I liked, which was most of this book, I have to point out that Christine Feehan didn’t waste any time establishing the relationship between Mikhail and Raven.  In fact, it starts out in the first few pages.  The first third of the book mainly consists of romance.  There was a little bit of plot  progression.  As soon as the action started, the romance was balanced out.
The characters were very real.  They all had their flaws, strengths, and fears.  Each character was an individual, having complex and justifiable reasons for their actions.    I enjoyed each and every one of them, even the obscure ones.  However, I was annoyed by Mikhail’s possessiveness and arrogance, even though I understood why.
I really liked this book.  I’m a huge believer in love and soulmates.  Christine Feehan definitely captured true love in Dark Prince.  I would recommend this book for adults who love paranormal romance.
Warning: several graphic sex scenes, gore, and some violence.
3/5

Book Review: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Title: The Alchemist
Author: Paulo Coelho
ISBN: 0061122416
Publisher:  HarperCollins
Genre: fable, fiction
Pages: P- 197

Synopsis:  (from Goodreads.com) Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its simplicity and wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an Alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a meditation on the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is art eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

What I think:  This book was very message oriented.  In the story, Santiago leaves everything behind to follow his dream.  That’s the message: follow your dream no matter how impossible or inconvenient it is.  If you want something and I mean really want it with all your being then it is your “personal legend.”  It was a very inspirational and uplifting story.  The beginning was slow; and by slow I mean almost-stopped-reading-slow.  In fact, I seriously considered closing the book and never thinking of it again.  But I decided to try and finish it...it’s only 197 pages...I could finish it.  By about halfway through I wanted to find out if Santiago had achieved his dream and found the treasure.  I continued reading.  When I finished, I felt inspired to fulfill my own dream(s).
Overall, I really liked it.  The writing was simple; so much so that it was an easy read.  The style reminded me of the Native American legends that I read in middle school (the ones in the “Reading” Anthologies).
3/5

Blog Hop Friday!

Hey everyone! So this weekend I will be participating in a blog hop hosted by Crazy for Books.  This is my first blog hop EVER...I know, crazy, right?  It looks like a great way to meet other bloggers and people passionate about books.  Very Excited!

Book Blogger Hop

Question: What are your feelings on losing followers?  Have you ever stopped following a blog?
I am new to blogging so I don’t really have that many followers...*cough*-one-*cough*...and I haven’t lost that one follower so I guess I haven’t really experienced losing followers.  However, if I were to lose followers I’m about 99.999999999% sure that I would be a little bit upset.
I have stopped following a blog.  It was mostly because there were long gaps of time between each post (1-2 weeks) and I lost interest in it.
